Oh happy day! After what seems like years of waiting (1 year, 7 months, 17 days actually - but who's counting?), The Venture Bros. will finally return to [adult swim] on June 1st! But as the last month-plus of waiting ticks slowly by, I can at least amuse myself with the recently released teaser trailer for season 3. According to Jackson Publick himself, this trailer only draws from 3 1/2 episodes of the season, but man does it bode well for ... Read on, Daddy-O

I'm not a huge basketball fan, but being in the New York radio & TV market and being a sports fan has made it nigh impossible to not know something of the disaster that was Isiah Thomas's reign as head coach and president of basketball operations for the New York Knicks. In four full seasons as the team president and two as head coach, Isiah's Knicks set new standards in futility, twice tying the team record for losses in a season ... Read on, Daddy-O

While you’ve all been consumed with trivial stuff like the Democratic Pennsylvania primary, climbing gas prices, or the little imbroglio over the Beijing Olympics, a pretty major milestone occurred right here on this site. While you've all been consumed with trivial stuff like the Democratic Pennsylvania primary, climbing gas prices, or the little imbroglio over the Beijing Olympics, a pretty major milestone occurred right here on this site. Earlier this morning GFS welcomed its 10,000th visitor since I made the move from my old blog in February 2007. Sure it doesn't seem like all that much compared to really popular sites, but I'm continually amazed that anyone wants to read my drivel after all ... Read on, Daddy-O

What’s your music IQ?

I received an interesting email from eMusic today that challenged me to test my musical intelligence. Naturally I got right on that. I scored a 129 out of 180 (how it’s scored I have no idea), which makes me a Mix-Tape Master (aw yeah!). Here’s what it says about me:

I received an interesting email from eMusic today that challenged me to test my musical intelligence. Naturally I got right on that. I scored a 129 out of 180 (how it's scored I have no idea), which makes me a Mix-Tape Master (aw yeah!). Here's what it says about me: You are a music evangelist: the person in your network of friends who always has the coolest new song, the one whose iPod gets picked to DJ every party. You understand ... Read on, Daddy-O

District Judge Robert Patterson Jr., who admitted (without embarrassment, presumably) that he found the "magical world" of the Harry Potter book series "hard to follow, filled with strange names and words that would be gibberish in any other context." (Judge Patterson, by the way, presided over the recently concluded copyright trial involving J.K. Rowling and RDR Books, would-be publishers of the Harry Potter Lexicon.) Now this is a first - an adult actually claiming that Harry Potter is too confusing. And ... Read on, Daddy-O

Gray Flannel Mixtape: Seinfeld songs

Categories: Mixtapes, Music, Television

These days it's commonplace for music to function as an integral part of a television show; think Grey's Anatomy, Smallville or Dawson's Creek. With Seinfeld, not so much. Nevertheless, there are more than a few classic moments during the series that can be called to mind with just a few notes. With that in mind I give you the Seinfeld Songs Mixtape. The following songs were played on at least one episode of Seinfeld, which started featuring much more non-original music ... Read on, Daddy-O

Vintage ephemera: The Hopalong Cassidy Savings Club

Categories: Ephemera

These are troubling financial times, my friends. Jobs are being cut, houses foreclosed on, and now the dreaded "R" word is being tossed around. In these dark days, who can show us the way toward fiduciary responsibility? If you answered "a fictional cowboy who looks eerily like Ernest Borgnine", give yourself a gold star. That's right boys and girls, our old pal Hopalong Cassidy will show us the way to fiscal solvency! So break open that piggy bank, look under ... Read on, Daddy-O

Last night marked the post-strike return of The Office and Scrubs, and the two shows basically picked up where they left off in '07. The Office, "Dinner Party" There were lots of great lines in this one, but I think I was more entertained than amused. The cringe factor was kicked up about three notches (to ... Read on, Daddy-O

Retrotisements: Prohibition repeal edition

Categories: Retrotisements

Yesterday marked the 75th anniversary of the practical end of Prohibition in the United States. On that day in 1933 - eight months before the passage of the Twenty-First Amendment to the Constitution - it became legal brew and sell beer with 3.2 percent alcohol by weight (4.0 percent by volume). For reference purposes, a can of regular Budweiser is 5.0 percent alcohol by volume. To celebrate this auspicious occasion, I've grabbed a sample of beer ads throughout the years. ... Album review mega-roundup: R.E.M., Black Mountain, Joe Jackson, and more…

Categories: Music, Reviews

There's no two ways about it: 2008 has been a bit of a letdown as far as new music goes, at least compared to last year. There have been some excellent releases to be certain (School of Language, Goldfrapp, and the Raconteurs among them), just not a lot that have hit the heights of '07. I'm going to play a little catchup with my reviews here, so let's dig in... R.E.M. - Accelerate (Warner Bros.) I've managed to be exposed to R.E.M.'s ... Read on, Daddy-O
