You were right that there were more ads than before. It looks like NBC discovered their ratings weren't as crappy as expected, so they sold additional slots as the games went on:

Oh, and you might want to read this if you want to follow Colbert's comment about "polonium sushi" in the last video:

NBC was expecting to lose up to a quarter-billion dollars on the Olympics, so they were engineering their coverage to get as many eyeballs as possible. That meant incessant coverage of the Vonn/Miller/Ohno/White nexus. I guess they figured they'd rather attract more casual viewers at the cost of pissing off the people who watched a lot. (It's not like you refused to watch, eh?) Also, with the advertising market being what it is now, they were stuck with P&G and Toyota (we're not trying to kill you, honest) as the only major sponsors.
It didn't bother me too much, since I was using the DVR for everything, and could skip the ads and the kiss-ass celebrity interviews.
I think they have more flexibility in the summer to commandeer MSNBC and CNBC, since the regular shows get lower ratings when people are on vacation. (There are also a lot more events in summer, so they have to do that) Though, I saw that curling got to be pretty popular on the trading desks where I work - they have CNBC on anyway, and you can watch the game without looking away from your turret too much.
You need to look up the Stephen Colbert interviews.

They should give the show to him.
