Fantastic Coca-Cola Star Wars/Burger Chef Posters (1977)

Ephemera
Growing up I was intimately familiar with the great sets of Star Wars drinking glasses sold at Burger King, with the Empire Strikes Back collection being my favorite. If you need a reminder, here's an ad for the 1977 edition: But what I didn't know about until very recently was the series of beautiful posters from which the design on those glasses was borrowed. Although these are listed as being produced for Burger Chef rather than Burger King. The artwork on these four beauties is credited to Del Nichols, and boy did he do one hell of a job. Let's look: Del Nichols These are all so very gorgeous, but if I had to pick a favorite I'd go with the Darth Vader poster, featuring Grand Moff Tokin. As great as the original movie posters are, I'd hang these bad b...

Dig This Collection of Star Wars Masks and Helmets

Auction Finds, Movies
Once more from the farthest reaches of the internet, I bring you cool Star Wars stuff. This time, it's a gallery Star Wars masks and helmets used in the original trilogy. Most of these closeup pictures were taken within the last few years or so, so you have to expect some visible wear and tear. Still, they're fascinating documents that went into the magic of the first three films. Up first is a snowtrooper helmet from The Empire Strikes Back. Bet you never knew they had green eyepieces! Also from The Empire Strikes Back, here's an original Ugnaught foam latex mask. You remember the Ugnaughts as the little pig people who worked in Cloud City and helped prep the carbonite machine for Han Solo. Here are three different angles of a regular ol' Stormtrooper helmet, worn during ...

Four Hilarious Star Wars Photos from The Empire Strikes Back

Movies
I know at least one or two of these gag shots taken during the filming of Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back have been floating around the internet for awhile, but some of them are new to me. These photos feature Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) hamming it up in poses both playful and, um, provocative.

Advertising, Retrotisements
I don't know if the social consciousness of the average American is lower than it was back in the '60s, '70s, and '80s, but it sure seems like it sometimes. I remember seeing a public service announcement (PSA) at least once or twice an hour while watching TV as a kid. These days, not so much. And the ones that are around don't seem to have much heart or soul. They're every bit as cynical and cold as regular ads if you ask me. So if you feel the same way -- or even if you don't -- let's take a look at some of the more memorable PSAs of the past... Johnny Smoke Cigarette advertising on TV in America was everywhere until it was pulled off the air for good by an act of Congress. But in the final years of tobacco ads, there was no shortage of anti-smoking ads meant to counter th...
Where’s C-3PO?

Where’s C-3PO?

Funny Stuff
Disney goes to great lengths to ensure that the employees who wear those giant costumes at the park are never seen with them off by the public.  I can imagine it would be traumatic for a kid to see Goofy out by the dumpster smoking a Kool.  So even though I'm well into adulthood it's pretty weird to see this photo of the cast of Star Wars, circa 1977/78, hanging together in civvies.  I'm sure once George Lucas gets his hands on this he'll photoshop Hayden Christensen in it. I'm sure you recognize Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher).  You can probably figure out which ones are R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew).  The last one (next to Han) is Darth Vader himself, David Prowse.  Sorry Anthony Daniels, you weren't invit
