And we're back with another word from our sponsors! Here are all the commercials shown during the fourth ad break of WABC-TV Channel 7's airing of Von Ryan's Express on June 19, 1982. We've got ads for booze, makeup, mufflers, and... ballet? Actually, now that I think about it, that sounds like the makings of a pretty classy evening. Except the muffler bit. (Part three of our look back at these commercials is right here.) Oh, I just love it when square white people break out the Freixenet and get all frisky! (Carta Nevada sparkling wine) (Helena Rubinstein) That's a sweet collection of early '80s cars, is it not? And is that an old VW Rabbit? I think it is. (Midas) Like I said, classy is the operative word here. Any time you throw out ballet companies per

Serene Branson feels a lot better, thank you very much

Serene Branson feels a lot better, thank you very much

TV & Radio
Turns it wasn't a stroke, nor was it drugs or alcohol (who the hell thought that?). Doctors are citing a complex migraine with an aura for Serene Branson's freaky post-Grammy word salad. KCBS Los Angeles does not pass up the opportunity to capitalize on Branson's discomfort and has her watch the clip for the first time since it happened. Still, even in her migraine-induced state she makes more sense than Ozzie Guillén usually does.
Product warning labels we really need

Product warning labels we really need

Funny Stuff
Because the government refuses to just come out and ban cigarettes outright, we get brilliant programs like the recently announced FDA campaign to place more graphic warning labels on packs of smokes.  Here's an example of what they're planning to do: Effective and scary!  I guess.  I know I don't ever want to smoke Brand cigarettes, that much is certain.  Anyway, I suppose it's only a matter of time before the gubmint steps in and tries to scare us from buying all manner of products that can cause real harm, so I've whipped up a few labels to save the taxpayers a little money. Advertising, Retrotisements
For those of us in the good ol' U.S. of A, Independence Day celebration time is almost here (that's the 4th of July in case you're reading this from foreign shores).  And that means that for those of us not spending the day looking for fingers blown off by illegal fireworks, it's cookout time!  So invite your friends and family over (Except for your second cousin Fred.  Holy crap, that guy's a boor.) and let's consume some charred flesh! First things first: let's fire up the grill!  (Kingsford Match Light charcoal, 1981) Who's up for some hot diggity dogs??? (Armour Franks, 1956) Or maybe burgers are more your style?  Don't forget the ketchup/catsup! (Hunt's Tomato Catsup, 1954) I don't know about you, but cleaning all those dirty glasses can be a real drag.  So break out the p

Retrotisements: Prohibition Repeal Edition

Yesterday marked the 75th anniversary of the practical end of Prohibition in the United States. On that day in 1933 -- eight months before the passage of the Twenty-First Amendment to the Constitution -- it became legal brew and sell beer with 3.2 percent alcohol by weight (4.0 percent by volume). For reference purposes, a can of regular Budweiser is 5.0 percent alcohol by volume. To celebrate this auspicious occasion I've grabbed a sample of beer ads throughout the years. Because I know how to party. (The main site has many more vintage alcohol ads for your viewing pleasure.) Hamm's From the Land of Sky Blue Waters (Minnesota) comes this vintage TV ad for Hamm's combines a few of my favorite commercial elements -- wonderful animation and a super-catchy jingle.
