Flashback: Baltimore Colts at Oakland Raiders, 1970 AFC Championship

Football Friday, Sports
We're just days away from the first Sunday of the 2013 NFL regular season, and on tap for the first week is a contest between the Indianapolis Colts and Oakland Raiders. This will be the 15th meeting between the two squads, with the Raiders holding an 8-6 edge. What I have for you today are some game action photos from the very first meeting between the Raiders and the then-Baltimore Colts -- the 1970 AFC Championship game, played on January 3, 1971 at Baltimore's Memorial Coliseum. Baltimore took an early 10-0 lead, and eventually pulled away for a 27-17 victory and a trip to Super Bowl V. It turned out to be the final home playoff victory for the Colts in Baltimore. Before we get to the photos, here are some NFL Films game highlights -- with the awesome title of "Duel in the Dust"...

The Von Ryan's Express of vintage 1982 TV commercials rolls on! This is the first half of the third ad break for the movie -- broadcast by WABC-TV on June 19, 1982 -- and it features spots for Kal Kan Mealtime, Diners Club, Miller Lite, and Ashford & Simpson. (Here are the first and second installments in case you missed them.) Of the four spots, my favorites are easily the Miller Lite and Ashford & Simpson one. The first is from Miller Lite's all-time great "Less Filling/Tastes Great" campaign that ran for many years and featured a host of sports legends. This one stars Ben Davidson, the great Oakland Raiders defensive lineman who also dabbled in film acting. He played Rexor, Thulsa Doom's second-in-command, in the 1982 Arnold Schwarzenegger classic Conan the Barbari...

Yesterday marked the 75th anniversary of the practical end of Prohibition in the United States. On that day in 1933 -- eight months before the passage of the Twenty-First Amendment to the Constitution -- it became legal brew and sell beer with 3.2 percent alcohol by weight (4.0 percent by volume). For reference purposes, a can of regular Budweiser is 5.0 percent alcohol by volume. To celebrate this auspicious occasion I've grabbed a sample of beer ads throughout the years. Because I know how to party. (The main site has many more vintage alcohol ads for your viewing pleasure.) Hamm's From the Land of Sky Blue Waters (Minnesota) comes this vintage TV ad for Hamm's combines a few of my favorite commercial elements -- wonderful animation and a super-catchy jingle. Sascha, th...
