Tumblr Highlights, Week Ended 9/6/13

Blogstuff
Here are some highlights from the last week on my very own Tumblr feed. Included here are some tourist shots from Cuba in 1955, some great scenes from the American retail scene of the 1950s, and an ad for The Chevy Chase Show. Click any picture to be taken to the original post, and by all means follow me there if you're a user. Book Report: Fletch (Gregory Mcdonald, 1974)

Book Report: Fletch (Gregory Mcdonald, 1974)

Books
It's taken me a long time to finally delve into Gregory Mcdonald's Fletch book series, although I can't give you a good reason why. I have loved the first movie for a few decades, so you'd think I would want to consume all I can about the character right from the source. But inertia is a powerful force, and so it is that I've finally started my journey this week. So, the original Fletch from 1974. If you're reading this I'm guessing you've seen the movie but not read the book, and want to know how closely the former follows the latter. So let's go ahead and get the story differences out of the way now. Needless to say, spoiler alert. Book Fletch is a blonde, not dark-haired like Chevy Chase. The Geena Davis movie role (Larry) is named Clara Snow in the book, and Fletch has a rathe...
Trailer Trash — Straw Dogs, Real Steel, and Happy Feet Two

Trailer Trash — Straw Dogs, Real Steel, and Happy Feet Two

Movies
I don’t have time to go to the movies much any more. So instead I’m going to just review some new and upcoming films based solely on their trailers. Because let’s face it, most movies only have about two or three minutes’ worth of good material anyway. Straw Dogs Well now doesn't this look perfectly life-affirming? Kids, the moral of the story here is that no good can ever come from having a hot wife (Kate Bosworth in this case) and then moving into a secluded house in a hick town with said wife. You'd think James Marsden would know better, since this is almost the same thing that happened in the original 1971 film starring Dustin Hoffman. (more…)

30 for 30 — Our Favorite MTV Music Videos of All-Time

Featured Posts, Music, TV & Radio
It seems like forever since watching videos on MTV was a regular part of our lives, but once upon a time it was. We could go on and on about how the station -- which turns 30 on August 1 -- turned to crap years ago for one reason or another, or about how the "M" in MTV seems to stand for Mook now, but let's not go there. Let's make this post a happy remembrance, one in which we celebrate what was rather than lament what isn't. So in that spirit of celebration, here is a list of our 30 favorite music videos of the MTV era (which kicked off on August 1, 1981). Not the best videos, necessarily, but the ones that had the most impact on us. Oh, and for you ranking junkies -- sorry, this is strictly in alphabetical order. 1. Daft Punk, "Around the World" In college we had a primitiv...
Fletch makes me sad

Fletch makes me sad

Movies
So I'm enjoying the Fletch/Fletch Lives double feature on AMC tonight, and a question occurs to me - has there ever been a bigger fall from funny for a once-great comedic actor than Chevy Chase's? There was a time (about 1975-1989) when he could legitimately claim to be one of the funniest men in American film (and TV, although his time on Saturday Night Live didn't even last 2 seasons). Sure, there were some real stinkers in there (I'm looking at you, Under the Rainbow), but the triple whammy of Caddyshack, Vacation, and Fletch should've been enough to be his lifetime meal ticket. Then there are the movies that, while they may not be in the same class as the Big 3, are pretty damn good anyway - European Vacation, Spies Like Us, Three Amigos, Funny Farm, Fletch Lives, and Christmas Va...

I love a good movie meme

Movies
I even love bad ones. But this one is pretty good (lifted from Culture kills). Of course I'm the special kid in school so I'm probably the last one to do this, but that's about par for the course. I just got rid of my last pair of Z Cavaricci pants like 5 years ago. 1. Name a movie that you have seen more than 10 times. I can name more than one - Flash Gordon, Weird Science, Caddyshack, and Nightmare on Elm Street for starters. 2. Name a movie that you've seen multiple times in the theater. The Empire Strikes Back and Private Parts come to mind, although I know there's more. 3. Name an actor that would make you more inclined to see a movie. Edward Norton, hands down. Or hands up. 4. Name an actor that would make you less likely to see a movie. Robin Williams and Ed...
