It doesn't seem quite possible, but when the Dallas Cowboys travel to face the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Divisional Round this weekend, it will be just the 32nd time the two teams have met since 1960. The two squads met only sporadically during the Cowboys' first decade, but twice in the 1960s it was to decide the NFL Championship. Here are a few programs from the all-time Packers vs. Cowboys series (for contests held in Green Bay only), including one of the most famous games of all-time. With training camp upon us and the 2014 NFL season just around the corner, it's time to revisit my list ranking all 32 franchises from best to worst. For reference, here is last year's list. And don't forget to check out all my other fantastic sports lists as well! I didn't see the need to introduce any major changes to my calculation system, other than to penalize teams for losing seasons. Also, I did go back and correct some data entry errors I discovered. None of this had a noticeable impact on the rankings, as no team moved more than two places from the 2013 list. The Criteria The categories and point values are as follows: 25 points for a championship game/Super Bowl win, 15 points for a championship game/Super Bowl loss (starting in 1932). 5 points for a season with a play

Thanksgiving turkey and the National Football League -- one of the finest traditions in all of American sports. And, as it turns out, one of the longest-lived as well. Since the NFL's inception in 1920, at least one game has been played every Thanksgiving, and since 2006 three are played. Most fans associate the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys with the now-dubbed Thanksgiving Classic series, and for good reason. The Lions and Cowboys have played the most Thanksgiving games ever, with 72 and 44 respectively through the 2012 season. Following behind are the Green Bay Packers (34), Chicago Bears (31), and Arizona Cardinals (23). Of these five teams, however, only the Cowboys and Bears sport a winning Thanksgiving record. Note: Newer franchise rankings can be found on my Sports Lists page. For several years I've been giving a lot of thought to how all of the NFL franchises are ranked in terms of the best ever. And one major fault I find with even the best ranking systems is that they invariably omit anything that happened before the advent of the Super Bowl, aka the dawn of the NFL's Modern Era. So while a lot of franchises boast proud histories prior to the late '60s, it's as if all those achievements didn't count in the eyes of most sportswriters or even fans. Since it’s the off-season I thought I’d start a fun project involving NFL history. So I’m going to go division by division and post football card galleries (when available) featuring all NFL players who have had their jersey numbers retired by their teams. This week it’s the four squads of the NFC East — the Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles, and Washington Redskins. Previous galleries: AFC East Dallas Cowboys (0) The Cowboys do not officially retire jersey numbers, opting rather to induct players into the Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor. One of the few things about the nearly interminable one or two-week buildup between the NFC/AFC championship games and the Super Bowl that I looked forward to was tuning into ESPN and watching hours upon hours of NFL Films' Super Bowl highlight packages. In some ways, watching those 30-minute capsules -- replete with their sweeping orchestral scores and booming narration by John Facenda -- was more rewarding than the games themselves. Through the magic of eBay and torrent sites, I've had the opportunity to watch Super Bowls from the 1970s and early '80s, that I wasn't around to see or was too young to remember. So I was a bit surprised to see that most companies riding the Super Bowl popularity train back in the day just decided to give stuff away. Tickets, mostly.
