30 for 30 — Our Favorite MTV Music Videos of All-Time

Featured Posts, Music, TV & Radio
It seems like forever since watching videos on MTV was a regular part of our lives, but once upon a time it was. We could go on and on about how the station -- which turns 30 on August 1 -- turned to crap years ago for one reason or another, or about how the "M" in MTV seems to stand for Mook now, but let's not go there. Let's make this post a happy remembrance, one in which we celebrate what was rather than lament what isn't. So in that spirit of celebration, here is a list of our 30 favorite music videos of the MTV era (which kicked off on August 1, 1981). Not the best videos, necessarily, but the ones that had the most impact on us. Oh, and for you ranking junkies -- sorry, this is strictly in alphabetical order. 1. Daft Punk, "Around the World" In college we had a primitiv...

New trailer confirms that, yup, a fourth season of Jersey Shore

TV & Radio
For those still concerned about our alarmingly large trade deficit, never fear -- we are now exporting our garbage to other nations. How else to explain this trailer for the upcoming fourth season of the runaway MTV hit Jersey Shore? Get More: Jersey Shore, MTV Shows, Jersey Shore (Season 3), MTV Shows OK, let's see what we got here. JWoww is still preoccupied with her boobs. The dancing in Italy is just as awful as the dancing in Seaside Heights. No orifice for any of the housemates is off limits. Snookie gets behind the wheel and fulfills at least two stereotypes. Everybody hates the Situation. Ronnie finds a way to let his roid rage explode in another continent. The Situation gets the beatdown he has so rightfully deserved for, well forever probably. ...

New Gnarls Barkley video is pretty sweet (and sick)

Music
Apparently MTV does still dabble in the music video trade from time to time.  Case in point - the latest offering from Gnarls Barkley - "Who's Gonna Save My Soul" - one of the coolest and yet most disturbing videos I have seen since "The Goonies 'R' Good Enough". Since I can't get the damn embedding from MTV to work, and because I can't find this on the band's YouTube channel, you can go here to check it out. The dumper in this clip is Aasha Davis, who has been in a whole lot of TV shows the last few years (South of Nowhere, Friday Night Lights, and Grey's Anatomy to name a few).  I don't know the dumpee.

Movies
I hadn't intended to use a Popeye quote, of all things, to start my first blog entry, but such is the capriciousness of life. I decided to start this blog to chronicle my take on Western culture; from the obscure to the popular, from the enriching to the mind-numbing. Speaking of which, we have been presented with yet another reminder that the collective taste of the American moviegoer seems to be about as sophisticated as the children's menu at Denny's. I am referring, of course, to the roughly $30 million (yes, that's US dollars) that The Dukes of Hazzard managed to swindle over the weekend. I'm still holding out hope that some absent-minded auditor accidentally shifted a comma one number to the right, but something tells me I'm in for disappointment there. (more…)
