Cool Stuff: Name That Tune Control Box from NBC

Auction Finds
Here's a really cool piece of vintage TV technology I came across. It's the control box from the NBC game show Name That Tune, which aired on the network from 1952-1954, 1974-75, and 1977. The auction for this box claims it's from the '50s version of the show, which I suppose is possible, except for one thing that contradicts that. See if you can guess what it is. This certainly looks simple enough to be from the 1950s, but a few things make me think it's from the '70s. The first is the faux wood grain DYMO label tape, which I don't think was around in the '50s. But mostly, that NBC logo on the "Made by NBC Electric Shop" label looks newer. Unless this was used internally for a few decades before the public saw it, it's most definitely from the '70s. In fact, that trapezoid N rol

For those who have not played along before, it’s simple: I pick 10 random tracks, you name the song and the band.  Guess correctly and win nothing.  Well, except a link back to your site if you have one.  (Link juice!)  And no cheating with Google please, there’s enough dishonesty in the world today. "I woke up with my head on the floor / In a windowless cell, a room full of doors / I got lost, now I'm so far behind / Took so much advice, forgot my own mind" "The woman from the supermarket ran to call the cops / He must be high on something, someone said." "We can move with savage grace / To the rhythms of the night / Cool and remote like dancing girls / In the heat of the beat and the lights" "It was an evening I shared with the sun / To find out where we belong" "I never

OK kids, I'll be pretty busy this week so to pass the time I'm going to throw out more lyrics for you.  It's simple: name the song and the band, and win nothing!  And no cheating please, there's enough dishonesty in the world today. 1. "In the thirteen months I've spent here / with my manuscript and rhymes / I've paid in case for foolish pleasures / mother dear you'd call them crimes" 2. "Like a gangster / on the run / you will stagger homeward / to your precious one" 3. "Don't give us none of your aggravation / We had it with your discipline" - Elton John, "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" (via Facebook comment) 4. "Fifteen years in the academy / he was like no cadet they'd ever seen" - Anthrax, "I Am the Law" (Raiden2332) 5. "Don't be afraid / I didn't mean to scar

I'm going to steal something that Jess ran on his blog many times - name that tune.  It's simple: I post a lyric from the next random batch of songs that shows up on my iPod, and you try to guess the song and artist.  If you guess correctly and have a website, you get a free link (otherwise, just your name).  You just can't buy that kind of publicity.  If this goes well I'll do it again.  Of course if no one guesses anything I'll just shitcan the whole idea.  Let's play!  (and no cheating by looking them up!) 1. "She can move you and improve you with her love and her devotion.  And she'll thrill you and she'll chill you, but you're headed for commotion." - KISS, ??? 2. "Tied to a chair, and the bomb is ticking.  This situation was not of your picking." 3. "I hang my head and I adverti
