Trailer Trash: Man of Steel Official Trailer #2

So is it June 2013 yet? Because my Spidey Sense -- oops, wrong costume -- tells me that Man of Steel may actually redeem the Superman film franchise from the snoozefest that was Superman Returns. Check out the newest trailer: It looks like the origin story just got a little darker, and DC is taking the franchise in a very Dark Knight-esque direction. That's no surprise of course, but as long as the movie's good I don't mind. If you want to watch campy Superman there are always the great Christopher Reeve movies out there (which means stop after the second one). We don't see much of Henry Cavill in action here but he seems to be a good fit visually. The effects also look awesome, and best of all Kevin Costner isn't using a stupid accent. Oh, and did I mention General Zod? Beca...

Trailer Trash — Oz: The Great and Powerful Looks Ridiculously Awesome

I never believed that we needed to have another Wizard of Oz film adaptation. The Judy Garland film is still one of the best movies ever made, and there certainly is no shortage of books to explore L. Frank Baum's wonderful world even further. But after seeing the first trailer for Sam Raimi's Oz: The Great and Powerful, I'm ready to rock. I really hope I'm not wrong on this, but I think this is going to be completely awesome. I'm so glad Sam Raimi is directing this, and I'm totally intrigued with James Franco as Oz/Oscar Diggs. While Robert Downey, Jr. would have done an excellent job, Franco conveys that sense of wry detachment that I think the character needs. Then there's the triple casting win of Mila Kunis, Rachel Weiz, and Michelle Williams as the three witches of Oz. ...

Trailer Trash: Wild, Wild Planet

I stumbled across this crazy-ass science fiction film while I was researching wire photos for my Facebook page. It's called Wild, Wild Planet and it looks absolutely terrible in the best way possible. The movie was released in Italy 1965 (where it was called I Criminali della Galassia) but has a definite '50s vibe about it. The trailer bills it as the first space horror movie, which is something to hang your hat on I guess. I have no idea what the hell is going on here, and I suspect that watching the full movie would be even more confusing. There's some people with four arms, and then there's some really strong women who can kick ass. There's also an attempt to merge a man and a woman into something called a "bi sapien," which is a dumb name because that translates roughly t

I don’t have time to go to the movies much any more. So instead I’m going to just review some new and upcoming films based solely on their trailers. Because let’s face it, most movies only have about two or three minutes’ worth of good material anyway. The Lorax I'm not familiar with the Dr. Seuss source material for this movie, so I don't care a whit about whether it deviates from the book or not. What I do care about is whether or not that stupid Polyphonic Spree song gets played in the movie. I hate that friggin' song and every commercial it infests. In any case, this looks like a lot of fun. I'm still not 100% sold on CGI animation in movies, but I think the world of Dr. Seuss is particularly suited to this type of visual approach. I can even overlook the inclusion o

Because let’s face it, most movies only have about two or three minutes’ worth of good material anyway. Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows I quite enjoyed the first Sherlock Holmes, even if it retained very little of the pure cerebral charm of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novels and short stories. I get that it's the 21st century, so big explosions are par for the course. What carried the first movie for me was pacing, good dialogue, and of course Robert Downey, Jr. and Jude Law. A Game of Shadows looks like it'll retain those key ingredients, which alone means it will be entertaining. What may take this one to the next level is

Because let’s face it, most movies only have about two or three minutes’ worth of good material anyway. Straw Dogs Well now doesn't this look perfectly life-affirming? Kids, the moral of the story here is that no good can ever come from having a hot wife (Kate Bosworth in this case) and then moving into a secluded house in a hick town with said wife. You'd think James Marsden would know better, since this is almost the same thing that happened in the original 1971 film starring Dustin Hoffman. (more…)

Because let’s face it, most movies only have about two or three minutes’ worth of good material anyway. Red Tails Whoa, did that guy just say "negroes"? Is that even allowed in a movie anymore? Well anyway, this looks pretty good even if you have already seen Glory or The Tuskegee Airmen (the latter of which also had Cuba Gooding, Jr.). Johnny English Reborn Ugh. Can't we just get Mike Myers to make another Austin Powers movie or something? I promise to forget that Goldmember ever existed.  Anything to avoid watching Mr. Bean in this travesty. I mean really, groin kicks? The Ides of March Ah yes, it's time for serious Geo

Because let’s face it, most movies only have about two or three minutes’ worth of good material anyway. Bad Teacher Ah I see, so it's like Bad Santa but instead it's called Bad Teacher. And Cameron Diaz gets to play the vulgar, ne'er do well lead role that Billy Bob Thornton had. She could pull it off, as she's always exuded this weird vibe of being physically attractive but kind of gross and skanky at the same time. I guess A-Rod is into that sort of thing. If nothing else the supporting cast is solid. Phyllis from The Office is an interesting pick for a co-star, but I'm guessing that Jason Segel (How I Met Your Mother)

I don't have time to go to the movies much any more. So instead I'm going to just review some new and upcoming films based solely on their trailers. Because let's face it, most movies only have about two or three minutes' worth of good material anyway. Conan the Barbarian I don't know a damn thing about Conan aside from the first Arnold Schwarzenegger movie (excellent) and the second Arnold Schwarzenegger movie (decent). Maybe Jason Momoa's portrayal of Conan is closer to the figure envisioned by Robert E. Howard in his stories. All I know is that I like my Conan with a touch of cheese and tongue planted firmly in cheek. This new take looks like a real friggin' downer, full on vaguely menacing but generic bad guys. Forgot the title character for a second -- the malevolent and sua...
