Why I pulled the plug on Disqus

Why I pulled the plug on Disqus

Blogstuff
Note: Since this post was published in September 2011, Disqus has sufficiently improved their product that I have decided to re-enable it. But in the interest of intellectual honesty, I'm leaving this post intact.   Regular readers of this site may notice that I am no longer using Disqus to handle my commenting. And if you haven't noticed, well, that's one of the reasons why. Allow me to explain. I installed Disqus to replace the native Wordpress comment functionality on this site, oh, at least a few years ago. My little blogger head was filled with the promise of even more interactivity and ease with regards to commenting, as well as more traffic.I liked Disqus enough that as recently as April 2011 I listed it as one of my 10 favorite Wordpress plugins. The thing is, ...

I've received absolutely zero requests asking what plugins I use to run this fine internet enterprise, so I thought I'd highlight some of the ones that are particularly nifty. Firstly, I must make mention of the fine folks at DIYThemes, creators of the Thesis theme. I've been using it to present GFS for awhile, and it's worth every penny. That's right, for the first time I actually paid money for a WordPress theme. It's robust, stable, and fairly easy to manipulate once you get the hang of it. Oh and as a bonus, the official and unofficial support you get on their message boards is second to none. Anyway, here are just ten of the plugins that I get the most use from -- I hope you can too! Disqus Comment System -- I thought long and hard before I turned over administration of my c...

Please excuse the mess

I'm experimenting with yet another WordPress theme, so things will look messy until I get used to it.  And for those lucky few subscribers to my RSS feed, apologies in advance for what you will probably encounter as I go back and re-configure the categories on my posts.

As much as I liked the most recent theme I implemented last week, it had some major issues I could no longer overlook. Biggest of all was that it used a modified version of the core Wordpress code, which meant that a lot of things I used to be able to do with Widgets had to be done manually. I'm a patient person, but not that patient. So please bear with me until this new theme is modified to my liking.
OK, I’m done changing things…I think.

After trying about a dozen different templates in the last 24 hours, I think I finally found one I can live with.  It's basically a modified version of this one.  It support Widgets, which is big for an ignoramus like me.  And it's easily customized, so I don't lose any sleep wondering if my blog is too generic.  Oh yeah, it's that important to me. By the way, I must note one delicious irony - the spellchecker for WordPress identifies "blog" as a misspelling.  Awesome.

Well, after finally getting fed up with Blogger (in spite of their recent, long-overdue upgrade), I decided to close up shop and move to the more affluent section of town - WordPress. Of course with the new-found powah of WP came the headaches of the initial setup. If I ever see the phrase "PHP" again I'm heading for the nearest clock tower. But the move is done, and now I have to do some unpacking. So if my real-life moves are any indication I will be eating off paper plates for the next 6 months while the regular plates sit in boxes, or whatever the appropriate blogging analogy is.
