Pennant Fever #4: 1952 Brooklyn Dodgers World Series Champions

Pennant Fever #4: 1952 Brooklyn Dodgers World Series Champions

Auction Finds, Sports
Here's a great World Series pennant from the days of the Brooklyn Dodgers. It celebrates Brooklyn's win in the 1952 World Series and lists a number of the players and the classic "The Bums" mascot. Click for a larger version. There's only one problem, though -- the Dodgers didn't win the '52 Series. They actually lost in seven games to the New York Yankees, so someone jumped the gun on this pennant a little bit. --- Don’t forget to check out the rest of my Pennant Fever entries.

Sports
With San Francisco's thrilling victory over the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 5 of the NLCS, we now await the start of the 2014 World Series. The Giants are back to their third Fall Classic in five years, while the Kansas City Royals are in it for only the third time ever -- and the first time since 1985. And so as I did for the four teams in the league championship series, I now present a gallery of selected vintage Giants and Royals World Series program covers, up through 1989. These are, as always, courtesy of the Press Room. Kansas City Royals San Francisco (New York) Giants

Yer Out! The 10 Longest Active World Series Title Droughts in MLB History

Listcruft, Sports
The last edition of this post ran in October 2012. Given that the two teams in the World Series this year aren't on the list, I feel pretty safe running it now. The 2013 Major League Baseball season is down to its last series, and so I turn my attention once again to the unlucky ten -- the franchises that currently hold the longest streaks in baseball for years gone by without a World Series championship. Some of these teams have at least managed to reach the summit of the Major Leagues, while others have a sad empty spot in their trophy cases. Season totals are current through the end of the 2013 MLB season. Showdown: Isiah Thomas vs. George Costanza

Showdown: Isiah Thomas vs. George Costanza

Funny Stuff
I'm not a huge basketball fan, but being in the New York radio & TV market and being a sports fan has made it nigh impossible to not know something of the disaster that was Isiah Thomas's reign as head coach and president of basketball operations for the New York Knicks. In four full seasons as the team president and two as head coach, Isiah's Knicks set new standards in futility, twice tying the team record for losses in a season (59 of 82 games). Playing in a city with a proud sports heritage, the Knicks became the real-life equivalent of the Washington Generals. But losing was only part of the humiliation - tawdry scandal and general piss-poor decision-making reared their ugly heads at every turn with Thomas. In trying to think of a sports executive who displayed equal pa...
