Although it was invented in 1967 by McDonald's Uniontown, Pennsylvania franchise owner Jim Delligatti, the Big Mac didn't enter the national consciousness until 1968. That was the year McDonald's added the sandwich -- originally dubbed the Blue Ribbon Burger and the Aristocrat -- to its national menu. In doing some quick research into how the Big Mac was marketed, I found what I believe to be the oldest national print advertisement for it. For the first entry in my new series, Vintage Tabletop, we're going to take a look at one of the countless TV tie-in board games of the 1960s -- Wacky Races. It's based, quite obviously, on the 1968 Hanna-Barbera cult classic cartoon of the same name. Released by Milton Bradley in 1969 (the same year the short-lived series ended), Wacky Races is a 2-4 player game targeted at the 7-to-15 age group. It's a fairly straightforward dice racing game, and the object is to beat the villainous Dick Dastardly to the finish line with your racer. Or as the game puts it, "The players maneuver their crazy autos across the countryside tying to avoid the traps set up by the villain, Dick Dastardly." It sure doesn't feel much like it here in the northeast, but according to my calendar it is actually the first day of spring 2014. Since opening my windows isn't an option yet, I can at least look at some vintage spring advertisements showing other people enjoying blue skies, crisp air, and green grass. Ah, and what better way to enjoy a fine spring morning than by inhaling a deep lungful of that rich, tobacco aroma only Chesterfield can offer! Hey, buy me a radio like that and I'll swoon too. After about the sixth beer this is pretty much what everything looks like to me too. Screw the Easter egg hunt, I want one of these beauties! Now this illustration can be viewed one of two ways.
